Read Richard’s Story
From losing independence to finding comfort, friendship, and a place that truly feels like home.
Why I chose Teddington as my home
Richard Leach chose Teddington Retirement Home after living nearby for many years and hearing it recommended as a trusted place for care and support. Its convenient location, strong reputation, and accessibility for family visits made the decision feel natural and reassuring, allowing his loved ones to remain closely connected as he began this new chapter.
Settling in and feeling supported
While leaving his own home was a significant change, Richard’s transition to retirement living was eased by the warmth of his welcome. From the moment he arrived, he felt accepted, comfortable, and supported by both residents and staff. That sense of security helped him focus on the positive possibilities ahead rather than what he had left behind.
“
I quickly made many friends…Everyone here does their part, and it truly feels like one big family.

My favourite part of life here
What Richard values most about life at Teddington is the people. He describes a community marked by understanding, compassion, and genuine care—where residents and team members recognize one another’s challenges and offer meaningful support. The intimate setting allows friendships to grow naturally and ensures each person feels seen, respected, and included.
What brings me joy each day
Music has been the defining passion of Richard’s life. Beginning piano lessons at the age of five, he has spent more than seventy-five years creating and sharing music. He taught high school music and developed experience across brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Even today, he continues to find comfort, purpose, and joy in playing whenever he can, proving that a lifelong passion never fades.
Advice for someone considering retirement living
His advice to anyone considering retirement living is thoughtful and encouraging: embrace the opportunities around you. Connect with the many intelligent, kind, and experienced people in the community, take part in programs, and remain open to friendship. Focusing on these positive connections can transform the entire experience.
My life before Atrium: Travelling, music, and adventure
Richard’s life story includes travel, creativity, and meaningful adventure. Through his wife’s career as an Air Canada flight attendant, he explored Europe and the United States, and he also holds a pilot’s license—an enduring reflection of his fascination with flight. During time spent in Europe, he even wrote and performed music for a film project while traveling between Switzerland and London, an experience that remains a cherished memory. Teaching and composing music have always been central to his sense of purpose.
What inspires me now
At this stage in life, Richard draws inspiration from his sister Nancy, whose support and shared musical background continue to encourage him. Coming from a family devoted to music has shaped his lifelong dedication to creativity and learning.
A happier outlook and full life
Since moving to Teddington, Richard has rediscovered the joy of meeting new people. Conversations with talented and interesting residents have renewed his sense of social connection and shared experience.
Living at Teddington Retirement Home has helped Richard focus on hope, acceptance, and meaningful daily living, even while facing health challenges. The caring environment, supportive staff, and genuine friendships make each day more manageable and fulfilling. While no place can fully replace home, Richard believes Teddington offers compassion, inclusion, and opportunity—and he would wholeheartedly recommend it to others seeking a supportive retirement community.
