Read Elsie’s Story
I moved here for comfort. Teddington felt like the perfect balance.
Why I chose to move to Teddington
For more than 50 years, Elsie Gaouette lived just four blocks from Teddington Retirement Home, passing by the residence many times each week on her way to local shops and familiar neighbourhood streets. When the time came to consider retirement living, choosing Teddington felt natural. Remaining in the Teddington Park neighbourhood meant comfort, familiarity, and the reassurance of staying connected to the community she has always known. Just as important, it allows longtime neighbours to continue visiting and sharing in her daily life, especially with family living farther away.
A smooth and welcoming transition
Elsie’s transition to retirement living was gentle and straightforward, as she moved directly from Sunnybrook Hospital into the community. She quickly discovered that Teddington is a peaceful and calm place filled with friendly residents, welcoming team members, and opportunities to stay involved. While she would enjoy seeing even more group activities—such as book clubs, singing groups, knitting circles, or reading gatherings—she appreciates the warm environment and the encouragement to connect with others in meaningful ways.

Life gets easier when you’re surrounded by good people and you don’t feel alone.

My favourite part of life here
One of the changes Elsie values most has been the evolution of dining. Now in her second year at Teddington, she has noticed thoughtful improvements in the meals, especially with the arrival of a new chef whose warmth and care are reflected in more interesting and enjoyable menus. These positive changes, along with attentive service from the dining and care teams, have become one of her favourite parts of daily life.
I love books, conversation and company
Reading has always been central to Elsie’s world. A retired English teacher and lifelong lover of words, she finds deep joy in books, conversation, and learning. Whether getting lost in a story, discovering new ideas, or completing daily crossword puzzles, reading brings peace, comfort, and mental stimulation. Her passion continues through participation in an alumni book club connected to the University of Toronto, where she recommends titles and shares thoughtful discussions with others who love literature as much as she does.

A life of learning, family, and resilience
Originally from Jamaica, Elsie came to Toronto as a university student and went on to earn multiple degrees before building a meaningful career in education. She married and raised two accomplished children—a son who received a scholarship to Harvard and later taught at Columbia University, and a daughter who studied at McGill and Columbia before becoming a journalist. Her husband, once the head of an English department, now also lives at Teddington receiving care. Reflecting on these experiences, Elsie recognizes the richness of a life shaped by learning, family, and resilience.
Who inspires me now
At this stage of life, Elsie draws inspiration from her children. Their strength, emotional support, and courage in facing personal challenges continue to uplift and motivate her each day.
Rediscovering patience in everyday Life
Since moving to Teddington, Elsie has rediscovered something unexpected: patience. Through daily crosswords, quiet reflection, and the gentle rhythm of community living, she has learned to slow down and embrace each moment—finding joy in both learning and waiting.
How life has changed for the better
Living at Teddington Retirement Home has brought familiarity, comfort, and lasting peace of mind. Surrounded by the beauty of the Teddington Park neighbourhood and supported by compassionate, attentive staff who care deeply about residents’ well-being, Elsie feels secure, respected, and connected. Seasonal celebrations, meaningful ceremonies, and shared community moments continue to bring people together and create a true sense of belonging.
A welcoming home in teddington
Elsie would warmly recommend Teddington—especially to those who already know and love the neighbourhood—as a welcoming place where community, care, and kindness come together to create a true home.
